- Address at least three themes that we have explored in class in this essay. Some obvious ones you might choose to use are “The California Dream,” the tension between visions of “sunshine and noir,” and the histories of migration to California. There are many others from our lectures and readings, naturally, so the ultimate selection here is up to you.
- Explicitly draw upon materials from our readings and films. I would like to see citations to at least four (4) readings and two (2) films in the final papers. Some of these citations can refer to the histories provided by writers like Joan Didion, D.J. Waldie, and the authors of the essays in LAtitudes. You can also make comparisons to characters in our readings and films, for example, to the story of Ezekiel Rawlins, or Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson, or Yvonne & Homer in The Exiles.
This revised assignment is more than just a historical narrative, it must be analytic, explaining the course materials and making clear connections between the materials and how you experience your California. This assignment is more than just a persona l narrative: you must provide analyses of these experiences supported by materials from at least four (4) readings, and (2) films from class. You must clearly indicate the materials you’re including from class lectures and discussion, film screenings and readings.

I posted my responds for some of the readings and my first essay. My professors comment on my essay “I’d love to know more about why California was the top choice of places for you to study. What did California mean to you and how did you come about that understanding? You do a good job here of getting at the positives and the negatives, the “sunshine and noir” version of California. Any ways to talk about that more in the revision? Isn’t it a paradox that the appeal of California has led to its congestion and pollution? What are we to do to keep the California Dream alive for future residents from all over the world?”
- I has to be more than 2000 words 12 point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins.
